Capitalism works hard, but the wellness influencer chastising you for not eating “whole foods” while simultaneously selling their protein powder works harder.
Kellogg created his cereal for similar reasons and was one of the main proponents of circumcising boys; to curb masturbation and the fake health risks he associated with it. Our daily reminder that colonialism and patriarchy harms everyone.
Thank you for writing about this and constantly shining light on this issue. I have Celiac Disease, and there are so many in our community who adhere to "clean eating" and shame others in FB groups and other online platforms. Its hard enough giving up a certain foods and relearning how to eat and keep yourself safe. I tire of the add'l judgment people feel so free to heap on otners, especially those they do not know
.
P.S. I have a meme that says "my idea of clean eating is using clean plates and silverware."
I'm so glad you brought up nutrition shakes. As someone with multiple digestive issues, I've relied on nutrition shakes after procedures that repaired my digestive system in different ways. They are life-saving and essential for many other people for various reasons. It needs to be okay to be nourished rather than not being able to receive nourishment because the nourishment is "processed".
I had to drink 4 supplements a day when I was in treatment for my eating disorder. I hated the taste of them and they carry some trauma now, but I needed them to renourish myself and they were an easy way to get a lot of calories in a less dense form.
I hope you are in a better place now. I don't think many people understand the serious impact eating disorders have. I'm sorry you have trauma associated with those drinks. I hope that if you need them in the future you are able to nourish yourself the way that works best for you.
I’m still struggling with my ED unfortunately. I found out I’m likely on the spectrum about 5 1/2 years ago, so that kind of reinforces a lot of ED behaviors.
At this point, I’m much more likely to get nourishment from baking delicious desserts and I prefer that to supplements. I would never shame anyone who has to use supplements to get nutrition though.
I'm sorry to hear that you are still struggling. I'm glad to hear that you have foods that you enjoy making and eating.
I'm personally so thankful for Shana for all of the ways she supports a more healthy relationship with foods that we enjoy. I hope you are able to heal.
Thank you, Michelle, for all you do. Watching the US wellness industry I’m beginning to think they don’t raise genetics as because RFK and co are eagerly touting eugenics, and they all see genetics — and social determinants — as moral too. I wonder how far the country is from a local version of ‘mudblood’ rhetoric? Not far enough.
The origin of graham crackers blew my mind. He’d be FURIOUS that we smother them in chocolate and toasted marshmallows.
And we should definitely keep it up, and with peanut/almond butter cups, for good measure! 🤣
LOL, he'd be furious about today's Graham crackers. They are a luxurious treat compared to the bland, tasteless wafers he created.
Kellogg created his cereal for similar reasons and was one of the main proponents of circumcising boys; to curb masturbation and the fake health risks he associated with it. Our daily reminder that colonialism and patriarchy harms everyone.
…but not equally.
"Is someone morally superior for eating clean? Is everyone else inferior?" This this this!
I so appreciate the depth and nuance of this response to the “clean” eating craze.

Random aside, but the giant cookie in your profile picture looks delicious!
Thanks! It's from Bake Me Happy in Columbus, OH

Thank you for addressing this facet of food!!
Never thought about the lack of cultural diversity in "clean eating." Thank you for highlighting this important point!
If we all knew more, we'd be less of a target
